Concord
Nestled in the heart of Cabarrus County, Concord was incorporated in 1806. Back in 1793 the Cabarrus County government was organized, and with their first meeting in January 21, 1793, they disputed until 1795 on where exactly to put the County seat of government. The city was to be located on 26 acres and named Concord, which means harmony. They felt this name was appropriate considering the compromise that finely laid to rest after two years of negotiations!
Industry first came about in the form of the first cotton mill in 1839. This is now known as Locke Mill Plaza at the end of Union Street. The mill was in a perfect location with the railroad running just to the west of town. As well a textile plant launched by Warren C. Coleman a black businessman who employed only African-Americans to work the plant. This plant became part of the Cannon chain after his untimely death.
In the late 19th century Concord’s population doubled from 1600 in the 1880’s to over 4000 by 1890. The city fire department was organized in the late months of 1900. This replaced the Concord Hose and Reel Company, a volunteer outfit that had operated since 1887. With a population over 60,000 in 2006, Concord is definitely a city on the rise.
Growth continued for the city through the 1900’s, with a population of 18,000 in 1985. The city began annexing property and included the Phillip Morris $100 million manufacturing plant in the south of the city. In 1991 they decided to expand their operation by $400 million, the largest expansion in state history. Also started in the 90’s was the Concord International Business Park.
Other facilities that have come to Concord includes the Old Courthouse Theater, that has on occasion plays, and dinner theater acts. 310 acres was purchased just down the road from Charlotte Motor Speedway which now lays claim to Rocky River Golf Course. Cabarrus Memorial Hospital located right beside Concord Mall, has had expansive additions since joining Duke University, and now provides some of the best medical care in the state.
Concord Mills, also known as North Carolina’s largest tourist attraction. The Mills encompasses over 1.4 million sq. ft. of space and attracts over 15 million visitors annually. Opened in 1999 Concord Mills includes a Bass Pro’s Shop, Circuit City, as well a Dave and Busters for entertainment.
What has truly helped Concord in growing over the last decade is the development of Concord Regional Airport. Now one of the 5 busiest airports in the state, many companies enjoy the convenience, without having to go to Charlotte for flights.
